I was not lost.

You were looking in the wrong cloud for a hundred years, keeper.

A very small spotted cat sitting in the fog, unimpressed

Keep your voice down. I am busy being undiscovered.

He sat out four generations of biologists.

Scroll. He stays exactly where he is, because that is the entire trick.

The label under his case

Field notes @tilcayoxyz

one

The Bolivian Yungas, where the Andes fall into the Amazon.

Cloud forest. Wet moss on everything. Fog so thick that a cat can stand eight feet away and simply not be there. This is the address he has been using.

two

A camera caught the rosettes first.

Big rose-shaped spots, far bigger than any of his relatives wear. Golden eyes. A squashed face that the biologist who found him described, on the record, as scrunched up.

He is about this tall. Three pounds. Eighteen inches, tail included.

three

A hundred years of nobody naming him.

Every scratch is a year he went uncatalogued. The last time science named a living cat, none of your great-grandparents had a telephone.

He counts these himself. Out loud. Slowly.
